I’m feeling grateful that I was given a tour of the Port Lands site thanks to Shannon and Netami at Waterfront Toronto. This massive undertaking is rebuilding the mouth of the Don River, which is currently a concrete channel that turns at a ninety degree angle before meeting the lake. The project is a fascinating tangle of very careful engineering and the restoration of more naturalized habitats and systems to river’s mouth. It’s amazing to see the care with which the new riverbed is being built: the contaminated soils are managed with such precision, I’m tempted to call it a soil choreography.

Here, dead trees have been brought in to create missing habitat.
